TOWN OF TONAWANDA, NY – Every Olympian has a place they start, and grow into a champion.

That home for Anita Alvarez is at Tonawanda’s Aquatic Center, where banners celebrate her success and locals cheer her to the Olympic stage.

Young girls who want to walk in her shoes someday were part of the same lineup as Alvarez. Alvarez grew up swimming with the Aquettes, and before that she watched her mother coach the girls.

“I grew up at this pool, so now to be back here, at the last little bit of my Road to Rio, has been really exciting,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez has been training in Western New York all week with her Olympic synchronized partner Mariya Koroleva.

She was honored to perform at home, and encourages young girls to follow their dreams.

“Just keep fighting for your dreams, and keep pushing,” Alvarez said. It’s not always going to be easy, there will be some hard days when you aren’t sure if you want to keep going, but just think of how much it is going to be worth it, and just keep fighting.”
